Before Galvinell actually came to exist, the land was occupied by Mr. Snyder & his chicken houses. At some point he sold to Calvin & Gladys Loy, that’s actually how Galvinell (Gal)ydis), Cal(vin), & their son, Russ(eIl) got its name.
In 1968, Shellcross of Rising Sun decided to no longer offer custom butchering, and that is when Galvinell became a vision! Shortly after a discussion between The Loy’s and Shellcross, construction of Galvinell began! In the Summer of 1968, it became the home of 700 lockers/storage. The Loy’s, with help from some family members, owned and operated Galvinell from 1968-1972.
At that time Dennis was purchasing hides, bones and fat for his rendering company (Welsh Products Co.) from Galvinell, and Mrs. Loy approached him for some help, which shortly thereafter turned into a business opportunity. Dennis & Judy took over ownership in the beginning of 1973. After 50+ years, the shop is still family run and employs the finest of people allowing us to offer a wide variety of hand-crafted specialty items, over 100 out-of-the-norm specialty sausage links, a multitude of frozen items, and is also home to our Custom Catering Division (Real Deal BBQ). All while staying true to our roots from the 1990s, we continue to be a USDA Federally Inspected Plant providing farmers of Cecil County and now far beyond with our custom slaughter of beef, lambs, goats and hogs by appointment. We also have an extensive retail store!
Our calendar fills up very quickly, appointments need to be called in early so we can provide you the finest of our butchering services.
